Evolve Reptiles

Who is Evolve?

Evolve are a group of volunteers that consist of hobbyists, pet store owners, veterinarian, zoo owner, an importer and others.

What is Evolve trying to do?

Evolve is attempting to get a group of qualified persons to act as consultants to the government in order to assist the government with any decisions pertaining to reptiles, amphibians or invertebrates.

What is bill 136?

Bill 136 otherwise known as the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act is the new animal cruelty act that is now law as of January 1st 2020. The full text of the bill is available here

That’s great news. Why would we want to fight that?

The act as a whole is great news for all animals. The part that concerns exotics owners is Part IV, sections 18 and 20. Prohibited and restricted animals. Basically, there is a prohibited animal list that can have an animals added to it at any time.

Is my pet on the list?

As of right now, there are no reptiles, amphibians, or invertebrates on the list. It is unclear as to how or when this list will be updated.

What will happen if my pet ends up on the list?

As of right now, there is a loosely worded grandfather clause. It would mean that if you had one of the prohibited animals before it made the list, you would be allowed to keep it. It appears that this clause can be removed at any time.

If they remove the grandfather clause, what will happen with my pets?

That is unclear, what we will be proposing to the government is a permit system for prohibited animals.
